Aastha

Considering what you have writtens, I collect you kids are watching a lot of television! Kidding! It was nice to see that most of you students watch (just) crazy cartoons, Discovery or National Geographic channels!
These days, lots of reality shows have hit the channel! Whether they are genuine or not is a big question! We must not fall in their trap and not follow any show that plays with human emotions or shows obscenity.
Since we do not have a very responsible broadcasting community, it becomes our responsibility to discourage the irrelevant shows by clicking the remote and shifting to another channel.
Entertainment is a must, but it should be healthy at the same time!
Interesting contributions in the inside pages! Next week, we will undoubtedly celebrate Independence Day! We The Kids will be celebrating its 50th issue on 21 August. The theme for that week would be We The Kids. Contributors are requested to submit their articles for the special issue as soon as possible!
Loads of love,

Cartoon Network

By Aman Thakur,(V)

I like Cartoon Network on which I see many cartoons like Richie Rich, Secret Saturday, Tom & Jerry. These cartoons make me laugh and make my day fun filled even though I may not play with my friends. It is very interesting to see how the chararacters of these cartoons are drawn. I enjoy drawing and want to learn how to make cartoon films when I grow up. My most favourite cartoon is Ultimate Muscle and Benten Alien Force.

Tom & Jerry

By Anuj Rana,
(V),John Martyn Memorial School
Tom & Jerry are my favourites on TV. In this cartoon Tom is always trying to catch Jerry. Jerry is very clever and always makes a fool of Tom. One day they showed how Jerry hid between two slices of bread when Tom had closed his eyes. When he opened his mouth to eat the sandwich, Jerry quickly ate it up and jumped to safety. Tom shut his mouth and ended up breaking all his teeth! We all had a good laugh.

My Favourite show

By Uday Singh, (V), John Martyn Memorial School
My favourite show is Jungle Tales. This show tells us very interesting stories which increases our knowledge. My most loved character is Pooh'. He is a very cute bear who eats all the time. He loves honey. He is also very naughty. I also like 'Tigger' because he makes me laugh. I love watching TV at night, but sometimes I am not allowed to as I have to wake up early for school.

More about deceit

By Rohit Misra
Some of the first reality TV shows like ‘Survivor’ and ‘The Amazing Race’ promoted courage and teamwork, and gave you a taste of real life competition. But this whole spirit got lost as more and more shows started appealing to our depraved instincts. It became more about deceit, politics, and using other people as a means to an end. Reality TV came into existence showing people rise to great heights while trying to overcome great challenges, but slowly it became more about people stooping awfully low just to win some money.
Overcoming your fears is a great concept for reality TV, but there are certain things that civilised people should remain afraid of. When people start eating live insects as tasks on television, one cannot help being concerned about the human race. Insects eat other insects because they have to, some humans, however, choose to do so. Haven’t we reached a point in our evolution where we can afford to be benevolent and compassionate towards other creatures? Ironically, the insects that are fit to be eaten are only those that would never hurt humans.
In India, Reality TV shows do not go as far as to show people eating insects, because frankly we haven’t sunk that low yet – though we are trying our best to get there. By plagiarising tried and tested western concepts in every single one of our ventures, we have lost our chance at making reality TV in India what it could have been. Being unable to match the technical aspect of the original shows, the producers solely rely on cheap thrills to entertain the audiences.
Bringing out the worst in people is easy, and it makes for good viewing, too. India TV depends upon the same for its very existence. There is nothing wrong with it – cheap thrills are still thrills. And I have to admit; it is fun watching people being mean to each other. But the real challenge lies in bringing out the best in people. A true artist would use reality TV to highlight the beautiful things in life. I guess the kind of show you make depends upon whether you think of yourself as an artist or a businessman.
You may get a few laughs watching ‘Roadies’ but it will never bring tears to your eyes – unless you cry when bored. You will never look at life differently after watching an episode of ‘Is Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao’. And if you ever come across the show ‘Dadagiri’ on Bindaas while channel surfing, change the channel immediately, because not even God can protect you from the horrors they would inflict upon your senses. The truth is that if we can watch the original programs, why would we watch the rip-offs which have the same flaws, but offer nothing new?
Reality TV should focus on the nicer things in life. Right now the theme is – achieve your objective by any means possible. These shows would be much more interesting if they had themes such as courage, sacrifice, love, overcoming tough odds. I believe it is the ascent of man from the animal kingdom that Reality TV should celebrate, rather than his occasional descent into the same.

Your love....

By Sagar,(XII-Sci),Doon Cambridge
A star glazed, a ray emerged
a note of love in my heart was heard
Loneliness departed, ceased were all blues
Life was renewed, the day I saw you
My eyes were outshone by glow of your face
Smell of your skin, my heart can never erase
Wounded I was, struck by your eyes
Pain causes, I would like to have all my life
Your smile makes my senses go drunk
your face, all beauties of heaven, get shrunk
Now my heart is in love this beautiful angel
Writing her name with mine on every gravel
God knows what has happened to me
It's only your image everywhere I see
From day to night my heart thinks of her
Missing her, loving her, calling her from my soul
Lost I am in my world with her
Thinking and dreaming, wanted her all
Uncountable feelings flow in a second
Nothing before like this to me ever happened
my thoughts move with each glimpse of her
my actions act with every act of her
my heart after knowing her knows only one thing
love is the song, i always wanted to sing with her
won't let her go apart, will always be her shadow!
Like moon with night, dreams with eyes
Waves with sea, drops with clouds
secrets with heart, fragrance with flowers
I will live with her till the last hour
My life is yours, take it away
but just, let my love stay...
Anything you 1 say I am ready to give
except my life,
for it is with you to live
Love you!

Deep in the night, when every ray of light is suppressed by the sheer presence of darkness.

I look out of my window with my head resting upon my pillow and, I think, I think about every thing, I think about the latest gadgets in the market, I think about my latest crush, I think about my parents, I think about my peers, I think about my next date but then, I think about my achievements. I think about my abilities and then again I look out of my window searching for the horizon. At the first glance of it I think, "Is that my limit?" Is it that what I am made for, to reach till a certain height and come back thinking, that there is no world beyond it. But then I realize that no, if at any moment I have to stop, then that shall be the day when my soul will be ready to leave my transient entity, till then I shall go on, I shall keep moving and when, I will be standing next to the horizon with no way of crossing it then I shall turn inhuman, in order to cross it, because I am inquisitive to know about the world beyond it and more over the odyssey of my life is limitless. Near the horizon there are two equipoised possibilities either I shall cross it or I shall not. Well, if I cross it then I will be happy but if I don’t then I shall be euphoric. I shall be euphoric because I know that at least I was ebullient enough to give it a shot. The interminable journey of my life shall go to eternity and don’t you think that past eternity, there is no point of Insurmounting ?

The curious case of cristiano ronaldo

By Rahul Kadian, (XI), RIMC
Why on earth would a person from funchel town In Portugal would think that a kid living a few blocks away, born on 5 feb 1985 to a normal parents, would one day become the FIFA world player of the year, and would grab the highest recorded transfer fee in football history! It all appears to be a dream – dream for the father who was a kitman for ronaldo’s club when he was 8, dream for the mother who had to shift to another city so that Ronaldo (at age of 11) could play soccer without being away from home, dream for the doctors who operated him for racing heart at the age of 15 – a disease which could potentially finish his career and dream for soccer fans all over the world as they saw the successor of legends like George best, Bryan Robson , Eric Cantona and David Beckhem for the Manchester united no.7 shirt. But (un) surprisingly, it’s all true……
It all began from a person named Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aviro and his love with football. He bagan kicking around at the age of 3 and at the age of 8, he was chosen for an amateur club named Andorinha. People say that he used to play on porch of his house for as long as 6 hours! 2 years later he was taken by CD nacional. At the age of 11, Cristiano Ronaldo’s fame had spread throughout Portugal. HE was later on signed by Portugese national club Sporting club de Portugal.
At the age of 18, on the inauguration of Estodio Jose Alvaledo tournament in Portugal, Sporting defeated United 3-1, courtesy- a brilliant game from Ronaldo. After the match the owner of Manchester United flew to Porugal in a private plane sign to Ronaldo. Thus, Cristiano Ronaldo was bought to Manchester united for £12.24 million in 2003.
Cristiano Ronaldo has a game of his own. His accurateshots, perfect ball control and blitzkrieg pace has made him one of the most dangerous players of the world. Though he is at his best at the Right wing, he is very useful at the left wing and at the center attack as well. In his normal he prefers to confers defenders from a standing start, then confounding them with a rapid medley of step-overs and short sprints. Recently he ahs been in comparison with Argentinean Lional messi, but people do not realize that their game are completely different-Messi is more of a ball controller and pefers to beat the defender by the ancient old trick of shoulder fake, unlike Ronaldo’s fast and furious game.
His premier league session in 2008-09 has been one of the best. In his 44 appreances, he has 8 assists and 42 goals (highest in the league). Not forgetting his winger duties, Ronaldo possesses a very high average of cross in per matches- 4.8 per match
Recently he has been in news for his legendry transfer to Real Madrid-£80 million with £5 million per year as a salary- making him one of the most expensive players of the world.
His glorious career include awards like FIFA pro young player (04,05), PFA fan player (06,07), Barclay’s player of the season (06,07), FIFA world player (08) and the Ballen’d’or(08).This list goes on & on & on and has much more to add to it. Though he is only 24, he is already the best player of the world. He has, maybe a ecade or more of football with him, club like Real Madrid , team mates like Cassilas, Raul, Kaka, Benzima and a very huge crowd support (84000 turned up for his inauguration at real Madrid!). Maybe we will see faster free kicks from him in the near future……..

Cricket: the sport India loves

By Sidharth Sharma,(VII), SJA
You all know that India is the 4th team to play test cricket, but beating every one and reaching at no. 2 in ICC Test Rankings and 3rd in ODI is no child’s play. Players like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammed Azharuddin, etc. have led India to victories.
The Airtel Border Gavaskar Trophy with 2-0 against Australia, England with 5-0, 1-0 in test, Sri Lanka 4-1 with 1-0 in T20, New Zealand with 3-1, and 1-0 and 2-0 in T20, West Indies with 2-1 has led India to this success.
Well, I used to be a football goal keeper, until I got interested in cricket, and left football. Daily practices go on but I play only cricket because I have been selected in indexing, but I’m not selected in the team. But now I’m only interested in playing cricket. I’m a left handed batsman and a right arm fast bowler, which means I’m an all rounder! I have a craze for cricket so why not have a spunky bat! I have a ballistic model of Puma.
Once it was a match of India’s against England in November 2008, the 4th ODI was going on. I had got a bit of homework but I still saw the match when no one was at home for about 4 ½ hours. Finally it was time to sleep and I slept at 11:45 at night and got late for school in the morning and was sent home. And then I got a terrible scolding from mom. But I’m happy that India won the match.
Its really unfair for the Women’s Cricket team, despite playing well, winning matches; they are not given a match fee. The BCCI can waste money for IPL but not for the women’s team. They don’t need money, they will play for nothing. Is this fair enough??
If you really think what I’m saying is right then please lets come together to improve the Indian Cricket Team.
I forgot to tell you about Adam Gilchrist. He’s a role model for me. I like him a lot. Actually, I was initially a right handed batsman but seeing Gilchrist, I learnt to play like him. This is Indian Cricket and I love cricket! If you also like it then even you can write in!!

Hard to resist

Cadet Siddarth Misra,(VIII),RIMC
The burnished plates of Tank regiments,
Or the rolling waves of Infantry.
The glistening aircraft of the Air Force,
Or the dark, quiet prestige of submarines.
All these take us to the realm of struggle,
To live a life of obedience and frugality.
In a place which is magnificent and fulfilling,
There are times to excel in sports and learning.
We take our gun and go to fight with hundred of crores of blessings,
But for now the rooms are good and we love our messing.
At last anyone would say that opting for Army is an honour,
Other wise you can sit at home and jolly well be a loner.

Cartoons

By : Vikramaditya Bhatnagar, Class VII , St. Josephs’ Academy.
In our everyday life, at least one T.V. per home is switched on for entertaining children. They get lost, trapped in the actions on the screen. What is that they like so much? The answer is: Cartoons.
Yes, children love cartoons – animated characters for entertainment. Adults usually feel it’s a lot of rubbish because it is the T.V. [or more likely the I.B. - the ‘IDIOT BOX’] that usually displays cartoons. Okay, they may be dangerous sometimes, but they are quite useful in my opinion.
The common cartoon channels: are Pogo, Nickelodeon, Animax, Jetix, Hungama, Disney Channel, Boomerang, and Cartoon Network. Animated shows, pictures, advertisements, etc. are shown in them. Although I like all of them, I have a grudge against 2 channels: Animax and Disney Channel. Animax is animated, and may look like a common cartoon channel, but it actually is very violent. It is almost as bad as the online violent games like ‘Godfather’.
Secondly, Disney channel is a good comedy, action-packed show, but now- a-days, most of the shows on Disney Channel are NOT ANIMATED. It takes the spirit out of the cartoons. Okay, I am not saying that Hungama and Pogo show too much animation either, but they overdo it on Disney Channel.
A very confusing show to give your opinion about is Shin Chan on Hungama. He may tell his mom that she is a Humungous Bighead, he may boss his dad all over the house, but according to me, it is the funniest animated show that I’ve ever seen. And here, my friends, my article ends .I say goodbye to you all with a note for any parent who reads the article: ‘Never, never forbid your child to watch cartoons on Sunday, because Sunday, remember, is Cinema day for all cartoon channels!’

The Bare Sabres

Cdt. Anshul Roy,(XI)
RIMC

This is a grand tale,
A tale beyond judgment.
A story, a legacy,
That refuses to fade.
They came in hordes,
With daggers, light and fast.
Of guns and swords,
That worked till the very last,
Then there was blood,
And pain,
And more blood.
The daggers stained in red.
The guns shot, and swords swished.
Working till the very last.
They cried for mercy,
But the other ‘they’ moved on.
Suffering death-
The harbinger of loss.
The child aged all but four
Innocence dripping, stood
Somewhere on the road
Blood dripping, headless he later lay
The swords swished, and the guns shot,
A fire
On the thatched roofs
All a pyre, a flamy pyre.
They found me,
All alone-
Somewhere in the house.
Death, then looked me in the eye.
Death, then stabbed me,
And shot me
And moved on.
Death had finally won.
I lay there,
Lifeless as a corpse.
Rather,
I lay there-a corpse.
Amidst hundreds more,
The stench of drying blood,
The rotten wounds,
The pang of death.
And in this world,
Full of life, and death.
There was nothing
but a quite uproar

MY FAVORITE - Television

By Shreya Kunwar, (IV), John Martyn Memorial School
I like to watch cartoons. My favourite channel is Nick. I watch Ninja Hattori, Shin Chan, Tom & Jerry, Pokemon, Doremon. I watch the news also, but I don't like to watch political news. I mostly watch news about sports. I enjoy pop music too. My favourite film is Matilda. TV is important for us. We can watch live telecasts on it and enjoy our favourite games. We learn all about world news and the weather. People living on coasts are warned about bad weather. We should, however, limit the time for watching TV. Too much TV can harm our eyes.

Reality Shows

By Akhil Thakur, (V),John Martyn Memorial School
Reality Shows help us to show our talent to the world. The children who take part in these shows learn how to get along with children from different cities, how to behave with strangers, eat new kinds of food and they get to see new places. But the best of all - they become famous very soon in their towns. On Colour Channel I like to watch 'The stunts of Pulsar Bike'. When I grow up I would like to take part and win. The people who take part have to be very strong and honest.

DISNEY & POGO

By Komal Kumari, (V), John Martyn Memorial School
Among cartoons I like Disney and Pogo. On the Disney Channel I like Phineas and Ferb. They go on roller coasters and they have made a big ice cream machine. On the Pogo channel there is M.A.D. and Hagemarv. In M.A.D. Rob does very shocking things, but very adventurous too. Hagemarv does all the wrong things, but makes people laugh. His parents also are funny and good at comedy. Watching these shows makes me happy.

Laughter is the best medicine they say. When we are bored or tired we like watching cartoons on television. My favourites on the cartoon channel are Hungama and Toon Disney. In Hungama, I like Doremon and Shinchan; and in Toon Disney, my favourite cartoon is Spiderman and Power Rangers. This channel is most entertaining and takes me into a different world each time.

National Geographic

By Akash Joshi, (V), John Martyn Memorial School

This channel teaches us all about animal behaviour and informs us about their habitat. It tells us how to behave with animals. We learn about the dangerous and harmful animals and how to protect ourselves from harm. All the people who deal with animals are fearless and to handle animals it is a very important quality. We learn what animals like or dislike.
We learn about birds, reptiles and some animals whose names we have never even heard! I also enjoy channels which tell us about inventions.

Discovery Channel

By Rahul Das,(V)
John Martyn Memorial School

My favourite channel is Discovery Channel. It gives us important information about animals, planets and geography. My favourite programme on this channel is Man vs. Wild. In the show there is a man who likes to explore. I also like to explore and discover new things. The man goes to dangerous places playing on his life. When he feels hungry he eats whatever is edible nearby.
I like him because he is a very adventurous and incredible man. Whenever I switch on the T.V., I always want to watch the Discovery Channel first as I feel it is the best channel on T.V.

Iss Jungle ko Unse Bachao!!!!!

Aishwarya Sharma
By Aishwarya Sharma,(XII),CJM
The television is amidst a state of metamorphic revolution and rejuvenation. There are unique concepts and formats in application to construct a new array of atypical programmes that capture the attention of the viewer and take the TRP on an all time high. There is this common trend of adopting formats of foreign shows and converting them into new Indian avatars and presenting them in a spicy and entertaining way in front of the entertainment loving audience. A few examples include the very popular Indian Idol, taken from American Idol, Big Boss adapted from the Big Brother series, and the most recent and talked about, Iss Jungle se Mujhe Bachao, taken from Get Me Out of Here!
It’s indeed a unique and peculiar show. Living in the tropical rainforests of Malaysia, in an isolated camp where the thick canopy of trees even cuts out the sunlight, making the inmates unable to differentiate between day and night, a residential camp in the heart of the jungle, coupled with life threatening conditions, testing the survivability of the Homo sapiens.
But the kind of conditions and struggles these guys are subjected to does critically raise certain questions about the way our reality shows work. Man is an adventurous being; he possesses the qualities of adaptation, and an instinct to survive in the toughest of conditions and a skill to maneuver every difficulty or crunch in resources. In fact, the life of the Homo sapiens began in the jungles. But in an era as that of today, where we’re facing widespread interference in the environment by humans, leading to catastrophic situations, can we really afford to welcome the exploitation of jungle resources just for the sake of entertainment and adventure???
Contestants in the show are supposed to consume things like earthworms, Madagascar cockroaches, grasshoppers, ants, and all kinds of insects, and also use up animals like pythons, rats, snakes, etc. can we really imagine the kind of risks we’re undertaking for us as well as for these poor animals out there? Why do those poor being have to bear the brunt of the reckless yearnings and pursuits for entertainment of the cruel human being who know nothing except plundering the environment?? Preparing mixtures, beverages, and ice creams out of animal entrails, mixtures of crushed insects, or the body parts of various animals and using them in those silly tasks for a trivial thing like one meal a day is surely the most heinous thing one can ever do against humanity. Do we even know how many organisms are falling preys to this madness?
And the worst part is, these big sacrifices made by these blameless hapless creatures are of no meaning for anyone. In fact, the ingredients are naturally detested by all the contestants.
People talk of the abusive language and the obscenity on the show. Frankly speaking, I really don’t care. There is not a single area today untouched of abuses and indignity. So now it really doesn’t make a difference to me how many times someone speaks the F word on a particular show. The thing that really disgusts me is the fact that in order to win some cash, and merely entertain the audiences, the channels are resorting to such barbarous acts. The forests in the world are seeing the stages of fast depletion and destruction. The day is not far when the richest and densest forests in the world as those in Malaysia will see a tragic state of affairs. Before we head into another wipeout, let’s just save our own lives and give up this madcap race for entertainment and mindless tasks and avoid cheap thrills in order to avert heavy damages.

How to stop worrying and start living???

By Roohi Nanda, IX, SJA
Worry affects everyone and influences our work, money, family life, and relationships. Everyone wants to get rid of these worries. Here are three simple steps to get rid of our worries:
Step 1: Getting the facts:
This is important because unless we have the facts, we cannot come to the root cause of the problem. Without facts we end up having no conclusion and tend to get confused.
Step 2: Analyzing the facts:
It is important to analyze the facts otherwise the facts would do no good. In fact, merely writing the facts on a piece of paper, and stating a problem clearly goes a long way towards helping us reach a sensible decision. As Charles Kettering puts it ‘A problem well stated is a problem half solved’.
Step 3: Arrive at a decision:
50% of our worries vanish once we arrive at a clear decision, another 49% usually vanishes when we begin to carry out the decision.
Therefore, 90% of our worries vanish when we clearly state our problem, and immediately carry out our decision.
WE ALL MUST TRY, ANALYZE OUR WORRIES.

As the twilight gathers around.
And the forest wolf leaps and bounds.
Blackest misery is all around like a web thickly wound
Tis is then I hear the shadow pass rustling through the wiry grass.
Shattering frost as if it were fragile glass!
He made his way through the woods.
To where the charred old ruins stood, covered in an eerie mist.
Still with a look of saddest wist
It is them the shadow reveals to me.
That he is that little thing called "hope".
He visits the ruins every night
And brings with him the faintest light
That is destined to grow so bright
Hope, the growing list.

21st Century women in Danger

By Kartikeya Semwal
Women of 21st century want to be independent and want to achieve success through their hard and quality work. For this they even work late in the evening and at night in the office surrounded by their male counterparts some of whom are wicked and evil. They keep watching them and strike as soon as they get the opportunity. Teenagers and women in their early twenties are in grave danger as crime against them is rising with every passing day. I wonder what has gone wrong in the country of queen Karnawati of Chittor who sent rakhi to Mughal emperor Humayun of Agra to save her kingdom from Bahadur Shah of Gujarat.
The Mughal emperor despite being a muslim tied it on his wrist understanding the importance of rakhi filled with love and honor and at once set out with his army to save his sister queen Karnawati but was a bit late as she and thousands of other women had committed ‘jauhar’ to safeguard their honour. Bahadur Shah ran away on hearing the arrival of emperor Humayun. Emperor Humayun was so grieved that he took up the burning ashes of sister Karnwati in his hand and cried that he could not save her. Later he defeated Bahadur Shah who had to run to save his life.God knows what’s wrong with the real brothers, let alone the social ones. They don’t realize that emperor Humayun was not a real brother of queen Karnawati, still he went to protect her honour. The latest case of Anshu Nautiyal’s murder has again raised fingers on security of women and girls in Dehradun. Cases of molestation and rape are on the rise in Uttrakhand and the situation is same throughout the country. TV journalist Saumya Vishwanathan was shot dead in Vasant Kunj when she was returning to her home in Sector-C of Vasant Kunj in Delhi. Jigyasa Ghosh a call centre employee too was murdered in Delhi known as the crime capital of India. The motive behind Jigyasa’s murder was robbery as her ATM and credit card were used by the culprits. I want to appeal to women from different age groups to carry chilli powder and a Swiss army pen knife to protect themselves from hooligans, robbers and criminals.
I would also like to appeal teenage and girls in their early twenties to carry the above mentioned things and always try to walk in groups of 5-7 so that such people don’t get their way so easily. Also they must share their doubts about suspected guys with their family and friends so that they can help them whenever required.
Teenagers and girls in their early twenties flash their skin trying to look modern but this modern behavior of theirs is the major cause of hooligans targeting them. They are attracted by their skin show and become lusty and so they target them and start harassing them. It all starts with a watch by greedy and wicked eyes which keep looking girls from day to day and finally one day when they get the opportunity they try to take full advantage resulting in physical harassment, assault, gang rape and murder at times. Women and girls should remain alert about suspects and must instantly call their parents and friends and police when in trouble so that instant action can be taken against the evil guys and a stern lesson can be taught to them. I’m concerned for safety of my mother and my sister as they too are among the womenfolk. I would like to call upon all sons, grandsons, nephews and brothers real or cousins to come forward to help their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, nieces and sisters. If all of them pledge to protect the honor of their mothers, grandmothers and sisters i’m sure those hooligans, robbers and criminals would think thrice to carry out with their evil plans.
As far as safety of teenagers and young women is concerned I would advice them to get enrolled in martial art classes. Learning some judo and karate tactics would boost their moral confidence and at the same time would provide them self defense. Another option is kickboxing as it teaches you to use kicks and punches in tandem whenever required. As for women in their thirties and forties, they should move in a group of 4-5 so they can not be targeted that easily. Also they should stay in contact with their husbands and sons through mobile phones so that they can come to their rescue or at least ensure that they are safe.
Older women should not wear costly ornaments and must avoid carrying cash as thieves are on the lookout for such women so they can snatch their cash and ornaments and run away. One last advice I would like to give to all girls and women is that try to identify as many things about these thieves, eve teasers and criminals like features of their face, their clothes and shoes. And if the miscreants are on bike or in a car then just note down their number plates and the model of bike or car, its color and company logo. These things would help identify and catch the culprits faster. And you girls and young women please carry chilli powder or spray and that Swiss army pen knife to give a befitting reply to those who carry an evil eye for you. Good luck and take care.

Are we ‘Peeping Toms’…?

From straight faced ‘Salma Sultan’ to bare all dare all ‘Rakhi Sawant’ and from orthodox ‘Hum log’ to shocking ‘Sach ka Samna’ Indian TV scene has come a long way! Now a days new rage is reality TV, and we the spell bound audience are like ‘peeping toms’. Leaving aside the merits and demerits of latest programmes (‘idiot box has become ‘hot box’ now)this genre of television broke the monotony to create interesting scripts and out-of the box ideas that made them stand out from the run-of-the-mill shows. Although drama-lovers are still glued to their idiot boxes at prime time, reality shows are hogging the limelight big time. These reality shows comprise of talent hunts, game shows, celebrity shows, makeover shows, or some of them are just plain voyeurism personified. However different their concepts might be, all the reality shows, intrinsically run on the same path. They put ordinary people or celebrities in real-life situations and allow peeping toms to enjoy the thrill of watching them! Star Plus’ show Sach Ka Saamna, the Indian version of polygraph test-based reality format The Moment Of Truth, was a hot topic of discussion few days back in the Rajya Sabha, , alleging that “obscene questions” were being asked about contestants’ personal life in front of their family members. It is felt that the show was against the “Indian culture”. The show actually is a success, thanks to the controversies it has raised and people are free to make harsh and lenient interpretations (obscenity can mean different things to different people, after all). The audience has the remote control and the power to switch channels and watch what they want. It’s ridiculous for a bunch of politicians to feel that society will be corrupted because of one show. Though personally I feel that the time slot is not appropriate and the type of questions being asked, it should be aired at around 11.30 pm, all said and done it is full of ‘adult content’ after all! Every one seems to have joined the band-o-wagon, recently celebrated Indian football player Baichung Bhutia, took of his soccer shoes and donned dancing apparel. . The popular footballer from Sikkim has won a reality dance show, ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa’, on Sony, becoming the latest in a long and ever increasing line of contestants to win a big prize on reality television, with no small thanks to SMS voting Actually the programme that ushered this wave was ‘Kaun banega karorpati”.When ‘KBC’ was started some years ago , so many were suspicious about success of ‘Big B’ of silver screen Amitabh Bachchan in TV world ,but he truly lived the saying ” He came, he saw and he won”. TV medium in India is not same as it was before his entry into this medium. All of sudden it was wave of KBC all over. People used to wait for 9 PM from Monday to Friday so that they could watch his interesting manners of presenting the programme.Several attempts were there to imitate this show on several other channels but no one could match the outstanding success of KBC. Apart from being a clean entertainer, it imparted knowledge to viewers. I would suggest young audience especially school going kids to watch TV but do not become addicts, TV viewing is a sedentary activity, and has been proven to be a significant factor in childhood obesity, and if at all they switch on then click for news related programmes , and opt for channels like ESPN, National Geography, and Discovery channel, because what we watch does make an impact on our psyche. Television can affect learning and school performance if it cuts into the time kids need for activities crucial to healthy mental and physical development. Most of children's free time, especially during the early formative years, should be spent in activities such as playing, reading, exploring nature, learning about music or participating in sports. Like a writer once said –“Television has changed a child from an irresistible force to an immovable object”. Do not let it happen to you!!
